Dear Parents,
It was great to see so many parents in the EMS Cafeteria this morning to hear the Head of School, Mr Viktor Novakovski give a presentation about professional learning for teachers. This is an important area that all schools need to focus on in order to ensure that teachers are fully trained and up to date with the latest research and teaching practices.
Uprising Day
As I am sure you are aware, tomorrow October 11, will be Uprising Day and will therefore be a public holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Friday. I hope you enjoy the extra day to spend with you family and take in what could be the final weeks of perfect weather.
MAP Testing
Thanks to all the staff and students who have been engaged in MAP testing these last few weeks. We have now completed these tests and the results should be available to parents at our upcoming "Parent Teacher Conferences" on November 9. More details about the Parent Teacher Conferences will come out later from either your child's Homeroom or TAG Teacher. Thanks especially to Ms Elena Guceva for her efforts in coordinating the process.

Nova students Peter Buttemere, Daniel Buttemere, Filip Angelovski, Justin Boyett, and Ellie Kate Buttemere represented the school well with excellent team spirit and sportsmanship. Peter and Daniel were the team's main pitchers, with a combined 49 strikeouts over 22 innings pitched, while Filip did well as a relief pitcher, with two strikeouts in two innings pitched." Please follow this link to see some of the wonderful photos of the students in action.
From the Counsellors
We are looking forward to being a part of your child’s social and emotional growth this year. In the ES, we will be visiting classrooms once or twice a month teaching students how to make good choices during times of conflict using Kelso’s choice. We will also be teaching them about the 8 personal goals found in the IPC. In the middle school, we will be teaching life skills to help them understand the personal, social and emotional changes that occur throughout these years. As counselors, we coordinate together and work as a team to help all of the students in school.

Not all unkindness is bullying. Here’s why we need to teach kids to differentiate.
I suspect most parents have felt something similar. In this state of heightened parental emotion, it’s easy to define the offensive behavior as bullying, particularly because it provides a narrative structure with a clear-cut villain and victim. But it’s important for parents to resist, or at least question, our use of the term.
After I calmed down a bit I realized that this incident didn’t rise to the level of bullying. None of the criteria above was really present, particularly the power imbalance. Someone can be insensitive, thoughtless, immature, mean and even aggressive without it being bullying. And it’s important to make sure children understand that. Here’s why: For the rest of their lives, our children’s happiness at home and success at work will be determined by how well they can navigate relationships and resolve difficult issues. If we write every unpleasant encounter off as bullying, we don’t prepare them well. At a minimum, we are modeling misdiagnosis. To read the full article please follow this link.
It's Ok to get mad - Helping kids to express anger without hitting or biting. I remember the first bite. My kids had just entered a blissful stage where they could play together for stretches of time. I was quietly congratulating myself when I heard a 2-year-old’s howl of anger followed by a 4-year-old’s shriek of pain. The older sister ran over to show off the fresh teeth marks on her arm. The cause? She had thrown her brother’s beloved stuffed tiger across the room.
Kicking, hitting, biting, throwing. It can be upsetting when our kids act out physically. It’s also normal. Little kids may feel angry, afraid or frustrated, but have limited language — so they often use their bodies to express themselves. Sometimes this looks like stomping feet or falling to the floor in the check-out aisle. Sometimes that looks like running away and hiding. And sometimes that looks like biting your sister when she takes away your favorite toy.A big part of parenting is helping our kids understand their emotions and then respond in a way that does not hurt themselves or others. Photos this week
In Pre-K3 this last we have been focusing on personal hygiene, such as washing hands, brushing teeth and taking baths. So naturally when it was time to paint we decided to add soap into our paint and explore painting with bubbles. As you can see we had lots of fun and made masterpieces.
Grade 5 pics Games of Longitude and Latitude Battleship as well as playing Kahoot before making our own.
2R class had a wonderful opportunity to learn about the Mid-Autumn festival in China and the way it is celebrated through an interesting craft project and stories - legends about how people in China began celebrating the holiday and worship the moon. Children enjoyed making paper lanterns.
Jeder Schüler aus der Anfängergruppe Deutsch hat ein Comic und passende Fragen zu seinem Inhalt erstellt. Die Schüler haben die Comics von ihren Klassenkammeraden gelesen und die gegeben Fragen beantwortet.
Every student from the beginning group German created a comic with questions that are linked to the content. The students read the comics of their classmates and answered the given questions.
These 3 students earned 55,000 points between them in a single week! Defne joins the 10,000 club and Meehan and Arun joined the 20,000 club. These amazing results pushed 5 Odbert to 5th place on the European Leaderboard ! See the photos below.
